Consuming Kids: Toying with Children’s Health

About 100 activists, scholars, concerned parents and citizens demonstrated their commitment to children by spending their Valentine’s Day at CCFC’s 3rd summit.  While down the hall at the Roosevelt Hotel marketers gathered at a conference sponsored by the marketing publication Kidscreen to plan new advertising strategies for targeting youth, attendees at our summit heard from leading scholars, authors, and activists about the harms associated with marketing to children.  Highlights included presentations from former Viacom executive Lisa Flythe on the limits of self-regulation, an eye-opening look at the commercialization of children’s literature by Daniel Hade of Penn State University, and a rousing call to action by Enola Aird of the Motherhood Project.  The next day, continuing CCFC’s tradition of combining education with activism, summit participants gathered for a lively demonstration at the International Toy Fair.
