Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood (CCFC) educates the public about commercialism’s impact on kids’ wellbeing and advocates for the end of child-targeted marketing. Our work routinely makes headlines around the world, most recently for campaigns holding Facebook and Google accountable for their data collection practices. Our advocacy has led corporations such as Mattel, Disney, Nickelodeon, and the NFL to change their marketing practices. We are also the home of the Children’s Screen Time Action Network, a collaborative group of educators, family professionals and practitioners working to reduce kids’ screen time. Our office is located in Boston.


CCFC is seeking a part-time Research Assistant. This role will support all of our programs, including our corporate campaigns and the Children’s Screen Time Action Network, and is crucial for making our organization run smoothly and effectively. Ideal candidates are curious, highly organized, detail-oriented, and passionate about reducing corporations’ influence on childhood. This is an excellent position for current graduate students. 


​​Research and summarize findings related to:

  • Latest developments in child-targeted marketing;
  • New studies documenting prevalence and harm of commercialism;
  • Marketing tactics used by companies to target children;
  • Developments in internet-connected devices and social media platforms for children.
  • Maintain and update our research library in Zotero;
  • Assist in creation of advocacy materials;

Support the Action Network Resource Library:

  • Identify resources that will enhance the Resource Bank;
  • Communicate with organizations and professionals regarding resource submissions;
  • Provide initial vetting for resource submissions based on established criteria;
  • Write abstracts for accepted resources.
  • Provide additional investigation for other Network and Campaign items as needed.


  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills;
  • Interest in and understanding of concerns relating to the impacts of commercialism and tech on kids, including corporate data practices, privacy issues, and health outcomes; 
  • Effective research skills, especially in summarizing findings and recommending potential next steps or approaches;
  • Editing skills, including both detailed proof reading and broader content shaping; 
  • Ease in Microsoft Office programs including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint;
  • Enjoys working in fast-paced environment with multiple competing projects and deadlines;
  • Able to work well both collaboratively and independently;
  • Interest in social activism and justice;
  • Must be able to work in our Boston office. Telecommuting will not be considered.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree or present graduate study in child development, psychology, or communication/media studies preferred;
  • Experience with Zotero preferred.

This is a part-time, 15 hours per week, non-exempt position. This position is not eligible for benefits.
